This is the first step in UPSC Exam, the preliminary test is divided into 2 papers of 200 marks that constitute a total of 400 marks. There is Negative Marking for wrong answers. The two papers are:
1. General Studies Paper 1 (200 marks)
2. General Studies Paper 2 (200 marks)

Note 1 : The Paper-2 of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%

Syllabus for UPSC Mains

The UPSC Mains Exam is the next step after UPSC Preliminary Exam. The aspirants who qualify for the Preliminary Test (PT) are eligible to take Mains Exams. The Mains Exam is a written exam and consists of 6 General Studies Papers, 1 local language paper, 1 English language paper, and 1 optional paper.

The students who qualify for the UPSC Mains are eligible to appear for Personal Interview Sessions of UPSC. The aspirants are expected to be through with all the subjects and should have in-depth information about their chosen optional.

The Civil Services Examination is conducted in two successive stages viz. the Preliminary Examination and the Main Examination. The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination consists of two compulsory objective types (multiple choice question) papers having 200 marks each. Broadly, Paper-I consists of Current events, History of India, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic & Social Development, General issues on environmental ecology, Bio-diversity, and General Science, & Paper- II consists of Comprehension, Interpersonal Skills, Logical
reasoning and analytical ability, Decision Making and Problem Solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy, and English. The marks availed in Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will not be counted in the main examination. Only those candidates who qualify at the Preliminary Examination are eligible for admission to the Main Examination. The Main Examination consists of a written examination of conventional type papers and an Interview.
